OUR PURPOSE

Throughout Utah, thousands of volunteers are helping to strengthen their communities everyday. The Governor's Points of Light Award is aimed at recognizing just a few of the many volunteers helping to make Utah a better state, while promoting and inspiring further volunteer efforts. The Governor's Points of Light Award is presented annually to Utah residents who demonstrate exemplary volunteer service to their communities.

PROCESS

Nominations of outstanding volunteers may be submitted by anyone, and there is no deadline for submission.

All nomination forms must be accompanied by a narrative statement that describes the nominee's community service activities and demonstrates how those activities address the community's serious social problems. Narratives should be approximately 500 words.

Up to ten pages (front only) of supplementary material may be submitted along with the nomination. These materials may include letters, testimonials, news clippings, etc. Audio or video cassettes, display materials, films, or scrapbooks will not be considered. Accompanying materials must be no larger than 8-1/2" x 11". All submitted materials become the property of the Utah Commission on Volunteers and will not be returned. All information is given on a voluntary basis.

CRITERIA

The following criteria are utilized in reviewing and judging the nominations for the Governor's Points of Light Award.

Achievement - The nomination must reflect the actual accomplishments achieved through voluntary service.

Community Needs - The voluntary community service must address unmet human, educational, environmental or public safety needs.

Innovation - Activities should reflect innovative or unique approaches to solving serious social problems.

Mobilization - Nominated activities should result in or present opportunities for mobilizing other volunteers.

Ongoing Involvement - The voluntary community service must be hands-on and ongoing rather than a one-time activity, with the exception of outstanding service for short-term crisis situations.

In keeping with the spirit of the President's Summit for America's Future, the Governor's Points of Light Awards will give special consideration to service seeking to provide youth with caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, marketable skills and opportunities to serve.

PRESENTATION

Winners will receive a declaration signed by the Governor. The Governor or Lieutenant Governor will present the award winners with their declarations at a ceremony held annually at the Utah State Capitol.
